Fresh Air, Scenic Beauty & Amazing Outdoor Recreation

This article can be found published on the Truckee Jobs Collective blog, a Chamber of Commerce initiative with the mission to bring together people who want to live in the mountains, with employers who are running great businesses and awesome cultures.

The Air Quality Score for Truckee is on average 46 out of 50, which is classified as “it’s a good day to be active outside.” That said, it’s fair to say there really is such a thing as ‘fresh mountain air.’ The rating also describes exactly what Truckee is all about – getting outside!

Truckee is home to over 17 miles of paved paths and more than double that in single-track dirt trails. There are flat trails, trails with slight elevation, trails with steep elevation, trails that lead you to amazing views and trails that lead you to amazing food.

In the summer, hiking and biking are the most popular on-land activities, while stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is quickly becoming the latest trend on Donner Lake. These sports are accessible to all ages and athletic abilities, making getting outside in Truckee a pretty simple task.

If you want to hone your skills and try out a pump track and some dirt jumps, then head over to Truckee Bike Park – then you’ll really discover why Truckee residents love this place. Supporting a dedicated team of bike enthusiast volunteers, the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District, Truckee Tahoe Airport and Truckee Sanitary District all helped create, manage and fund this community staple since 2012 – an example of a true grass roots community effort.  If you can pack a picnic and ride a bike, you’re sure to have a great day at the Truckee Bike Park.

In the winter, in addition to the 7 ski resorts within about 15 minutes of downtown Truckee, including Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center, one of the best cross country ski centers in North America, spanning more than 2,800 acres through beautiful forests and meadows. There are also countless miles of winter trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking and snowmobiling expeditions. Even if you think you’ve seen the best views already, trying out a new sport and a new trail gives you an entirely different view of this beautiful area every time.

And speaking of views, there are 3 can’t-miss views that you must see Truckee from:

Castle Peak – an ancient volcanic rock stands perched on the horizon above Truckee. The hike itself is a nice moderate half-day hike, 6 miles round-trip from the trailhead with approximately 1,000 feet in elevation gain. The trailhead is just off I-80, north of the Boreal/Castle Peak on and off-ramps.

Sawmill Lake is hidden above the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, just 2.3 miles round trip from Northstar’s Zephyr lift. It follows along the famous Tahoe Rim Trail.

Rainbow Bridge overlooks Donner Lake and is just a short car ride up the hill from the base of the lake on Old Highway 40.
